Douglas Jones, CFA
Douglas Jones is the Chairman and co-founder of JCIC and a key member of the investment management team. Doug has worked in the investment management business for more than 43 years, bringing extensive experience in research and the management of portfolios for individuals and pooled funds. Doug is the Chair of the Investment Committee which oversees the firm’s investment philosophy and implementation. His responsibilities throughout the firm’s history have included all facets of the business - portfolio management, operations, client relationships and compliance.
Prior to co-founding JCIC in 1993, Doug was Vice President, Investment Research for Canada Trust Investment Counsel (CTIC). His prime responsibility while at CTIC was to deliver a professional and comprehensive domestic and foreign research product to the $4 billion personal trust investment division. He also managed pooled trust funds in both domestic and foreign equities and fixed income.
Douglas is a Chartered Financial Analyst and has an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario.
President and CEO
Stephen MacCulloch is a financial professional with 31 years of experience in investment banking and capital markets. Before joining JCIC, he was Vice Chairman of Scotiabank’s Global Banking and Markets division where he worked since 1998. In that role he was responsible for maintaining relationships with many of the firm’s key clients across Canada and managing several financial professionals. In addition to those duties, Steve was a member of the Equity Liability Committee. Prior to joining Scotia, Steve worked as an Investment Banker at Midland Walwyn and RBC Dominion Securities in Montreal and Toronto. In those roles he helped finance and advise companies on over $60 billion of transactions in numerous industries, including telecommunications, consumer products, industrial products and utility sectors.
Steve has a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) degree from the University of Western Ontario. He also studied French at Université de Grenoble, France, after completing his degree at Western. Steve previously served on the boards of Velan Inc., Alpine Canada, Partners for Mental Health, the Montreal General Hospital Corporation and the Montreal Chest Institute.
Secretary and General Counsel
Stephen Smith founded Newton House Investments upon leaving McCarthy Tetrault and combined his interest in Newton House with JCIC in 1999. Stephen's experience with regards to estates, trusts, pensions, foundations, private corporations, and the purchase and sale of businesses is available, as a resource, to our clients. Stephen practiced law with McCarthy & McCarthy (now McCarthy Tetrault) for 25 years, specializing in taxation law, including estate planning. During this period he also developed extensive interests in the chemical industry. Stephen has also been a successful lead investor in private business ventures in tele-communications equipment and medical products.
Stephen is active in the arts and education circles in Toronto. Stephen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto and an L.L.B. from York University.
Vice President, Portfolio Manager
Cameron Scrivens began his career working for accounting firm Ernst & Young in Toronto before moving to the investment industry in 1993 with Carson Group in New York, where he was a health care analyst. In 1997, he joined AGF Management in Toronto, where he advanced to Vice President and Portfolio Manager responsible for a range of U.S. and global mandates. Prior to joining JCIC, Cameron was a Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager of U.S. and Global Equities at RBC Global Asset Management Inc. We are proud to announce that Cameron is an award winning portfolio manager with over 26 years of experience in the investment industry.
Cameron is Vice-Chair of the Board and Chair of the Governance Committee of Dixon Hall Neighbourhood Services; a charitable organization that supports thousands of Torontonian through 60+ programs.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Western Ontario and a MBA in Accounting from the University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management.
Andrew Simurda, CFA
Vice President, Portfolio Manager
Andrew Simurda has been an investment professional for his entire 24 year career, with extensive experience in Canadian portfolio management. For the last 15 years, Andrew worked with Laketon Investment Management (a division of GLC Asset Management, a Great West Life company) as Vice President and Portfolio Manager. During this time, Andrew managed and co-managed several different Canadian fund mandates. Previously, Andrew worked for over two years as a sell-side analyst at Yorkton Securities where he covered Canadian Telecom, Cable and Wireless Hardware stocks. Andrew also spent over three years at Zürich Canada Investment Management as a Senior Analyst, covering Canadian equities, corporate bonds and other fixed income investments.
Andrew has an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Western University. Andrew completed the Canadian Options course and holds the CFA designation.
Kai Lam, CFA
Vice President, Portfolio Manager
Kai Lam has worked in the investment industry for 20 years, most recently as a Managing Director and Portfolio Manager for Gluskin Sheff + Associates. While at Gluskin Sheff, Kai developed their International Fund, which invests in both developed and developing markets outside of North America. Kai joined Gluskin Sheff in 2001 as an Investment Analyst and from 2007 to 2016 worked as a Portfolio Manager on various Funds, including International, Growth, RRSP, US Equity and segmented pension assets. Previously, Kai served as VP, Research and Associate Portfolio Manager for Thornmark Asset Management, and as an institutional equity research associate for CIBC World Markets.
Kai graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelors of Commerce with first class honours, and is a CFA charterholder.
Michael Da Silva, CFA, CIPM
Michael Da Silva joined JCIC Asset Management Inc in April 2015. He is responsible for securities and cash trading, and performance functions. Prior to joining JCIC, Michael worked at Franklin Templeton Investments.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Commerce from York University and a Master of Finance from the University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management. Michael is also a Chartered Financial Analyst and holds the Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement issued by the CFA Institute.
Michelle has over 15 years of experience in wealth management. Prior to joining JCIC, Michelle worked at RBC Wealth Management as an Associate Portfolio Manager and at UBS Wealth Management as a Client Advisor.
Michelle earned her Bachelor of Arts in Administrative and Commercial Studies at the University of Western Ontario. She has also achieved the Canadian Investment Manager designation and has completed a number of industry related courses.
Michelle is fluent in German, having lived and worked in Germany for a number of years.
Manager, Client Services & Marketing
Laura Spunde joined JCIC in April 2013 as a summer student, before accepting a full-time position in 2014. Laura is responsible for assisting with relationship management, marketing, communications and event planning for the firm.
In 2014, Laura graduated with a Bachelor of E-Commerce specializing in International Business from Humber. Laura successfully completed the Canadian Securities course in August 2016 and the Wealth Management Essential certification in 2017. Since then she has been focusing on additional courses to broaden her skills and knowledge of financial services.
Office Manager & Associate, Client Services
Jancis Sullivan joined JCIC in September 2015, bringing over 30 years of experience as an Executive Assistant, Investment Advisor and Settlements Manager.
Jancis' strong organizational and interpersonal skills make her a valuable asset to the firm as our Office Manager and a member of our client service team.
Chief Compliance Officer and Chief Operating Officer
Aaron Coholan has over 20 years of investment operations experience and is a specialist in back office management. He has previously worked for a major Canadian custodian, a hedge fund administrator and an institutional investment management firm. He joined JCIC in 2007 and is responsible for all back office operations and processing.
Aaron holds a Honours Bachelor of Arts from Trent University, has been awarded the Canadian Investment Manager designation, and is a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI). Aaron is an active member of the Operations Head and Compliance Group with the Investment Counsel Association of Canada.
Tina Huang, CPA, CMA
Tina Huang is a financial professional with over 15 years of experience in corporate finance, budgeting, and fund administration. She is responsible for the Management of the Finance, Operations and Human Resources functions. Prior to joining JCIC, Tina worked at Invesco Canada, Algorithmics, and the Bank of Montreal.
Tina earned a Bachelor of Commerce from University of Toronto. She is also a Chartered Professional Accountant designation holder.
Senior Operations and Compliance Analyst
Renata Muzeka-Harasim has over 17 years of experience in investment operations. She is responsible for portfolio and trade administration functions. Prior to joining JCIC, Renata worked at Citibank as Client Service Officer, and at CIBC Mellon as a Client and Advisor Specialist.
Renata holds a degree in Economics from University of Nis and a Financial Planning Diploma from George Brown College. Renata has also completed the Canadian Securities Course, Derivatives Fundamentals Course, Investment Dealer Compliance Course and the Conduct and Practices Handbook Course.
